Pfarrplatz

Pfarrplatz

The square in front of the parish church of St. Veit was a traditional site for religious festivals, political and social events and a weekly market. In 1930 there was an early parade by citizens under the swastika, when provost Johann Schrimpf celebrated a field mass to mark the Gau party rally of the NSDAP.

The Pfarrplatz was also the site of the Gestapo office. In early February 1945 the 22-year-old deserter Richard Ott was shot dead in front of the church while attempting to evade the authorities. Ott had already deserted once and had been forced to serve in a “probation unit” in Poland. While there, he escaped during a transfer from a field hospital back to his punishment company in January 1944. After making his way to his hometown of Krems, he was hidden by his family at the home of some friends. A former schoolmate discovered him by chance and immediately reported him to the police, who arrested him. Shortly before the police vehicle came to a halt on the Pfarrplatz, Ott jumped out and ran towards the Störgasse. The Wehrmacht captain Franz Hahn later boasted in a bar: “That commie lad, I shot him.”
